WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Donald Trump issued restrictions on asylum seekers, barring people from seeking asylum if they do not cross at ports of entry on the border. This restriction puts asylum out of reach for many immigrants who are fleeing violence including those in the migrant caravan that Trump has politicized and denigrated.

Today’s act doubles down on an out of control immigration policy that includes troops at the border, children and families in jails, and a bigoted Muslim ban. These policies and Trump’s rhetoric have ignited violence and separated families in recent weeks and over the past two years.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Our country just voted decisively to reject Donald Trump’s two years of cruelty towards immigrants, asylum seekers, and so many other vulnerable groups. This country has long aspired to be a welcoming beacon to those seeking a better life and freedom from oppression. This tradition is central to the identity of our nation, and voters embraced that message of inclusion on Tuesday by putting a check on Donald Trump.

“The Sierra Club continues to stand in solidarity with asylum seekers, Muslims, refugees, immigrants, people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, and all those threatened by the Trump administration’s dangerous nationalist agenda. We will continue to make our voices heard. Protecting our communities, the rule of law, and our environment go hand in hand, and everyone who values a just and free America should continue to resist cruel, unlawful actions like this one."
