WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Nancy Pelosi made history by being re-elected Speaker of the House. The Sierra Club previously announced its support of Nancy Pelosi to be next Speaker of the House of Representatives in the first endorsement the organization ever made for a House leadership race.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"The Sierra Club is proud to congratulate Nancy Pelosi on making history once again as the next Speaker of the House. We deeply value Speaker Pelosi’s tireless commitment to protecting our environment, our climate, and our democracy.
“As the Trump shutdown continues over his destructive border wall boondoggle, we are encouraged by Speaker Pelosi’s determination to reopen our government. Finally, there is an adult in the room. Moving forward, we are eager to work with Speaker Pelosi and the growing group of progressive climate champions in Congress to do what Congressional Republicans have refused to do: restore U.S. leadership on climate action while building an economy and a government puts the needs of the people first instead of just the wealthy few."
