WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Sierra Club released a poll conducted by Global Strategy Group that shows that Americans in seven states (CO, NC, MI, MN, WA, NV, AZ, WA) overwhelmingly reject the Trump administration’s approach -- or lack thereof -- to dealing with the climate crisis and protecting our air and water. In fact, when asked to rate the Administration's job performance on a range of issues, respondents give it its worst marks on climate and the environment. Rather, strong majorities across states agree that climate change is a problem that should be addressed by federal and state government.

The polling data also find that clean energy remains as popular as ever; in every state surveyed, the public prefers policies that encourage the U.S. to move away from fossil fuels and toward more clean energy like wind and solar. And at least seven-in-ten respondents in every state support ambitious 100% clean energy goals.

“The salience of climate change and the desire for government action to fight it is higher than I’ve ever seen. As a result, respondents across all seven states show incredibly high support for moving away from fossil fuels and toward 100% clean energy – and they overwhelmingly reject the Trump administration’s energy and environmental agenda,” says Andrew Baumann, Senior Vice President of Global Strategy Group.

Other key findings include:

There is strong support for moving states to 100% clean energy by 2045, including:

  • 72% of Arizonans

  • 79% of Coloradans

  • 83% of Michiganders

  • 78% of Minnesotans

  • 74% of Nevadans

  • 79% of North Carolinians

  • 79% of Washingtonians

Overwhelming majorities want the U.S. government to take action on climate change, including:

  • 84% of Arizonans

  • 87% of Coloradans

  • 89% of Michiganders

  • 88% of Minnesotans

  • 85% of Nevadans

  • 85% of North Carolinians

  • 87% of Washingtonians

Most disapprove of the Trump administration’s handling of climate change, including:

  • 60% of Arizonans

  • 64% of Coloradans

  • 65% of Michiganders

  • 65% of Minnesotans

  • 66% of Nevadans

  • 60% of North Carolinians

  • 73% of Washingtonians

In response, Sierra Club Polling and Research Director Grace McRae released the following statement:

"While the Trump Administration is rolling back our clean air, water, and climate safeguards in favor of dirty fossil fuels like coal, polling demonstrates that Americans prefer that the country not only act on climate but transition to 100% clean energy. This poll should serve as a wake up call for the Trump Administration -- Americans want climate action and they want it now.”
