WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Democratic House leadership -- including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Eliot Engel, Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone and Select Committee Chair Kathy Castor -- introduced H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act.
Nearly two years after Donald Trump announced his intent to withdraw the U.S. from the landmark Paris Agreement, the Climate Action Now Act will ensure that Trump is unable to follow through on his reckless and ill-informed threat by prohibiting the administration from spending money on Paris withdrawal and requiring the administration to produce a plan for meeting our international commitments.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“While Donald Trump and Washington Republicans continue to stick their heads in the sand, Congressional Democrats are continuing to make the case for bold climate action. This legislation recognizes that the Paris Agreement is a critical pathway for tackling the climate crisis, increasing global cooperation, and amplifying and complimenting vital climate action legislation. The Sierra Club applauds Speaker Pelosi, Representatives Engel, Pallone and Castor, and House Democrats for once again showing what climate leadership looks like.
“Donald Trump’s attempt to withdraw the United States from this landmark agreement is one of his most egregious steps to weaken our country’s international standing. If Congressional Republicans are serious about American global leadership, they will immediately support and help pass this critical legislation.”
