Washington, DC-- Today, despite the House and Senate passage of a resolution to overturn Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration, the President vetoed the bill. The move comes one day after the Senate passed the resolution and after several lawsuits, including the Sierra Club’s, challenged the constitutionality of the declaration. Several members of the Republican party in the House and Senate made clear their disagreement with Trump’s decision.

In response, Melinda Pierce, Director of Federal Policy at the Sierra Club released the following statement:

“When it comes to forcefully building more border walls and espousing xenophobia among his base, Trump hasn’t once hesitated to abuse his power, overstep our democratic process, or violate the Constitution. Trump is using his first and only veto to block the congressional check on his egregious power grab. This veto is against the will of the American people and Congress and will harm communities and our environment in the process.

“The Sierra Club is committed to fighting these border walls and this abuse of communities, immigrants, and our natural environment through every step of Trump’s backwards, cruel agenda. We will continue to challenge this fake national emergency and share the real stories and voices of border communities who know the only crisis is the one the Trump administration is creating.”
