BP Claims to Support Climate Action While Continuing Push for Arctic Drilling

Aberdeen, Scotland -- At BP’s annual meeting this morning, shareholders passed a resolution calling for the company to lay out a business strategy consistent with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The resolution was supported by BP’s board and passed with 99% of the vote. A second resolution that would have required the company to set targets for reducing emissions from the use of the oil and gas it produces and sells did not pass.

Meanwhile, BP has continued to invest in new fossil fuel extraction around the world, including in some of the world’s most treasured natural landscapes. In fact, new reporting this weekend revealed the extent of BPs lobbying push to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil and gas extraction.

In response, Sierra Club Campaign Representative Ben Cushing released the following statement:

“Actions speak louder than words. BP can’t honestly claim to be taking meaningful climate action while continuing to push for a massive expansion of fossil fuel development, especially in such a sensitive area as the Arctic Refuge. If BP is serious about making their business practices consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement, they must start by pledging not to exploit this unique and pristine wilderness for the sake of more oil that would drive the climate crisis.”
