BACKGROUND: This report is to be released amid controversy around Kansas electric rates, and the State of Kansas calling for an official study on electricity prices. Meanwhile, the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is in the midst of developing a long-range planning requirement for Evergy, a first-ever for the KCC.

For many people in eastern Kansas, Evergy, the parent company of Westar, is the only electric provider available. This gives Evergy a particular responsibility to make financially and environmentally sound decisions, as ratepayers can’t simply take their business elsewhere.
