WASHINGTON, DC -- Today the House Subcommittee on Water, Oceans and Wildlife will hold a hearing a suite of bills to strengthen protections for endangered species. Included is the Protect America’s Wildlife and Fish in Need (PAW and FIN) of Conservation Act, which reverses recent Trump administration rollbacks to the highly successful Endangered Species Act.

The hearing comes at the same time the Western Caucus is holding a roundtable to unveil a number of bills that would further undermine endangered species protections.

In expectation of the developments Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director for Lands and Wildlife Kirin Kennedy issued the following statement.

“World scientists are clear about the urgent need for action in the face of mass extinction. We cannot afford to continue to put politics before science when it comes to endangered species. We know how to save species; what’s needed is the political will to make it happen. The legislation being taken up today by the Water, Oceans and Wildlife Subcommittee offers positive steps to increase protections for endangered wildlife. We encourage Congress to resist being sidetracked by the Western Caucus and instead quickly move forward legislation to aid our nation’s imperiled wildlife. If not, the result will be extinction.”
