LOS ANGELES -- On Sept. 28, the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter and Team Sierra will host outdoors advocates from across the city for the first-annual City Hike: LA fundraising event. The trek will guide participants throughout the city in order to raise money for clean energy, clean transportation, and the safeguard of California’s lands. Los Angeles currently ranks among the top U.S. cities for highest levels of toxic smog.

While this is the first City Hike fundraiser, the Sierra Club’s Angeles Chapter has already made huge strides over the years in fighting big polluters and cleaning up LA’s air. This has included persuading a pro-oil city council to study the phasing-out of oil production in Culver City, as well as helping Glendale residents convince the city council to halt the expansion of a fracked gas plant in favor of clean energy.

"Access to clean air and public lands is a basic human right,” said George Watland, the Sierra Club’s Angeles Chapter director. “We will continue to fight for the clean energy future every Angeleno deserves and to ensure that residents of our city can breathe clean air, drink clean water, and experience all the natural beauty our parks, forests, lakes, and beaches have to offer."

Beginning in Koreatown, hikers will choose between a 3.8 or 7.7-mile journey studded with food and drink from local vendors, downtown attractions, and famous parks like Grand Park, Vista Hermosa, Pershing Square, and MacArthur Park.  The money raised from the City Hike: LA will ensure that the Sierra Club can continue fighting for clean air in California for years to come.

Partners and sponsors for this year’s event include AllTrails, Klean Kanteen, Angel City Brewery, Tito’s Vodka, Le Pain Quotidien, The FruitGuys, Plush Puffs Marshmallows, Latino Outdoors, Pacific Rim, and Parks Project.
