Baytown, TX -- A group of 22 Greenpeace protesters have formed a blockade on the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas, blocking the transport of oil and gas through the country’s largest fossil fuel thoroughfare for 24 hours.

The action comes ahead of the third Democratic primary debate, happening tonight in Houston.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club rises in solidarity with these brave activists who are fighting back against the fossil fuel industry’s devastation of our climate and our communities. Continued extraction and burning of fossil fuels threatens our communities’ health, our clean air and water, and our climate. It’s time for our leaders and politicians to listen to the communities that are shouldering the burden of fossil fuel pollution and living on the frontlines of the climate crisis. We applaud these activists for highlighting this crisis and demanding real climate action.”
