WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the House of Representatives passed Donald Trump’s NAFTA 2.0.

Yesterday, Data For Progress released new polling that finds over 60% of voters believe trade agreements should reinforce the Paris Climate Agreement, include binding standards to limit pollution, and ensure independent enforcement of environmental standards. Donald Trump’s NAFTA 2.0 includes none of the above, and in fact, Trump’s deal does not even mention climate change, yet House Democratic leadership struck a deal to move it forward.

The Sierra Club evaluated the newly-updated text against the fundamental changes the environmental community has repeatedly called for. The revised deal fails on each of the 7 core environmental priorities that the Sierra Club and other leading environmental organizations have consistently named. In fact, the deal is even worse for our environment than anticipated, and the nation’s largest environmental organizations are united in opposition to a deal that would lock in more climate disruption and toxic pollution for decades to come.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Donald Trump’s NAFTA 2.0 is nothing short of a giveaway to corporate polluters that will lock in his polluting legacy for years to come. The American people and everyone across North America deserve a trade agreement that will work in lock step with the goals of the Paris Agreement, not a deal that sells out our children and fails to even mention the greatest crisis of our time. The Sierra Club strongly urges all Senators to vote no on this toxic trade deal.”
