WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the majority of Senate Republicans voted to block the admission of first-hand witness testimony for Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the majority of Americans have called for the inclusion of witnesses and evidence in the trial, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has so far rejected the terms while admitting to coordinating directly with the White House as opposed to acting as an impartial juror.  The Sierra Club has called for a fair trial with witnesses so as to protect our democracy and our clean air, clean water, and a safe climate.

New revelations this week name additional Trump Administration officials with first-hand knowledge of Trump’s wrongdoing. On Friday, Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly commented that an impeachment trial without witnesses is only “half a trial.”

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Mitch McConnell made it clear from the outset that he never intended for this charade to be fair or impartial, and that’s exactly what is happening. McConnell and all those who stood with him have broken their oaths to act as impartial jurors. Despite what McConnell and other Republicans may believe, no one, not even the president, is above the law. The eyes of history -- and of American voters -- are on the Senate.”
