Washington, DC-- Today, the Washington Post reported that Trump will “divert an additional $7.2 billion in Pentagon funding for border wall construction this year, five times what Congress authorized him to spend on the project in the 2020 budget.” Trump is using a national emergency declaration to continue moving tens of billions of dollars from national security budgets to fund his wall-- despite several legal challenges including a challenge by the Sierra Club, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC) that still awaits a final ruling.

In response, Rob Vessels, the Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors Campaign Manager released the following statement:

“When it comes to Trump getting his wall and destroying public lands in the process nothing— no funds, no resources, no check nor balance— is off limits. Trump’s move to steal this shocking amount of money from our service members and their families allows hatred of migrants to overpower care for Americans. The Sierra Club will keep fighting this destructive border wall and the Trump administration's cruel border policies. We will not sit by as this administration divides communities, destroys natural places and wildlife habitat, and unlawfully steals funds to build this wall.”
