WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Top House Republicans unveiled part of their legislative plan to reduce carbon emissions. These plans are myopically focused on carbon capture and sequestration while preserving the fossil fuel industry, failing to significantly address greenhouse gas emissions and the fossil fuel industry.

In response, Liz Perera, Sierra Club’s Climate Policy Director issued the following statement:

“There’s nothing House Republicans love more than pretending a climate bill in name only will cover-up for their denial and inaction. Joining a caucus only to maintain the status quo did not fool the public, nor will slapping a fancy title on legislation that preserves the fossil fuel industry.

“In order to make any significant progress on climate, we must transition to a clean energy economy. Giving the fossil fuel industry more subsidies under the guise of promoting carbon capture or sequestration will accomplish nothing.”
