INDIANAPOLIS — The Sierra Club this week launched a statewide radio ad campaign urging residents to demand that the state Senate reject HB 1414, a piece of dangerous and unnecessary legislation that would slow the retirement of Indiana’s aging, polluting coal fleets, lead to higher bills for families and businesses, and worsen the climate crisis.

Representatives from grassroots environmental groups, economic justice organizations, as well as consumer watchdog groups, energy associations and the petroleum industry, have publicly opposed the bill, which would keep coal burning in Indiana—already burdened with more Super Polluter coal plants than any other state—for decades to come.

Sierra Club’s radio ad will run for several weeks, urging Hoosiers to text “Indiana” to 69866 and tell their state senator to vote against the bill.

Wendy Bredhold, senior campaign representative for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign in Indiana, released the following statement:

“This legislation would stick families and businesses with higher electric bills to bail out the dirty energy industry, even as utilities here at home and nationwide are making the smart economic decision to phase out expensive, polluting coal fleets and add more clean wind and solar.

“We urge every Hoosier to text ‘Indiana’ to 69866 and tell their senator to vote ‘no’ on this unfair and unjustified coal bailout.”
