WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s extreme abortion law that would have gutted reproductive health rights in the state. Louisiana’s law was nearly identical to a Texas abortion law that the Supreme Court overturned in 2016. Read more about the Sierra Club’s previous Gender Equity work here.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court has once again affirmed that access to healthcare is, in fact, a right protected under the Constitution. And abortion care is healthcare. Today’s ruling is a long overdue victory which affirms a woman’s right to make their own healthcare decisions. Everyone has the right to lead a healthy life, which includes access to clean air, clean water, and equitable healthcare -- including safe abortions.”
