After years of blocking funding for rebuilding Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, Donald Trump announced a plan yesterday to release the recovery funds.
This weekend marks three years since the hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico, devastating communities, killing thousands of people, and forcing hundreds of thousands more to migrate to other states like Florida. Congress appropriated billions of dollars for recovery efforts in 2018, but the Trump administration has refused to make these funds available. Trump has repeatedly complained that Puerto Rico was getting too much money in relief funds.
In response, Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz released the following statement:
“This is a shameless and transparent attempt by Donald Trump to play politics with the suffering of the Puerto Rican people. For three years, as Puerto Rican communities struggled to rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Maria, all Trump had to offer was a tossed roll of paper towels. Now, less than 50 days from the election, he wants us to believe that he is heroically supporting Puerto Rico out of the goodness of his heart, but we will not be fooled. The American people deserve a president who works in our best interest all the time, not just when it’s politically expedient. That’s why we must do everything in our power to ensure that we vote Donald Trump out of the White House on November 3rd.”

Después de tres años de negligencia y obstrucción, Trump intenta ganar votos con la ayuda de Puerto Rico

Después de años de bloquear los fondos para la reconstrucción de Puerto Rico a raíz del paso del huracán María, Donald Trump anunció el viernes un plan para liberar los fondos de recuperación.
Hoy se cumplen tres años desde que el huracán devastó a Puerto Rico, dejando a cientos de comunidades incomunicadas, sin servicios ni comida, forzando a cientos de miles a emigrar y matando a miles de personas. El Congreso asignó miles de millones de dólares para los esfuerzos de recuperación en 2018, pero la administración Trump se ha negado a poner estos fondos a disposición de los puertorriqueños. Trump se ha quejado repetidamente de que Puerto Rico estaba recibiendo demasiado dinero en fondos de ayuda.
En respuesta, el presidente del Sierra Club, Ramón Cruz, emitió el siguiente comunicado:
“Este es un intento descarado y transparente de Donald Trump de jugar a la política con el sufrimiento del pueblo puertorriqueño. Durante tres años, mientras las comunidades puertorriqueñas luchaban por reconstruirse tras la devastación del huracán María, todo lo que Trump tenía para ofrecer era un rollo de papel toalla. Ahora, a menos de 50 días de las elecciones, quiere que creamos que está apoyando heroicamente a Puerto Rico por la bondad de su corazón, pero no nos engañemos. El pueblo estadounidense merece un presidente que trabaje en nuestro mejor interés todo el tiempo, no solo cuando sea políticamente conveniente. Es por eso que debemos hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para asegurarnos de que el 3 de noviembre saquemos a Donald Trump de la Casa Blanca ".
