Los Angeles, CA -- This morning, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) are announcing plans to cancel billions worth of spending to repower three gas plants, totaling more than 1.6 gigawatts. Instead, the City will invest in transmission improvements and at least 3 gigawatts of clean energy and battery storage resources that will create thousands of union jobs.

Within a decade, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power -- the nation’s largest publicly owned utility -- will be almost completely free from fossil fuels. Clean energy and battery storage already account for almost 30 percent of LADWP’s power, and families and businesses will continue benefiting as the price keeps dropping.

Luis Amezcua, Senior Campaign Representative for the Sierra Club’s My Generation Campaign issued the following statement:

“This is a tremendous showing of leadership by the Mayor and LADWP, and one of the best decisions we can make for the health, safety, and prosperity of our city. Investing in our clean energy economy means creating family-sustaining careers, cleaner air, and building a healthier future. We have a lot of work ahead, but we’re more ready than ever to see this historic announcement become a reality.”
