Washington, DC -- Following the conclusion of an illegitimate Supreme Court confirmation process last night, Mitch McConnell adjourned the Senate without passing COVID-19 relief. House Democrats passed a relief package more than five months ago. On Sunday, Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows declared that the US is “not going to control the pandemic,” as hospitals are already warning they may soon have to ration care. More than 226,000 Americans have lost their lives to coronavirus, nearly 8.8 million have been infected, and millions more have filed for unemployment and are suffering under the weight of the pandemic.

In response, Sierra Club National Director of Policy Advocacy and Legal Leslie Fields released the following statement:

“Mitch McConnell refusing to lift a finger to help our friends, our family members, and our communities as we suffer under the weight of this pandemic isn’t some brilliant political calculation, it’s an act of cowardice. After months of downplaying COVID-19 and dismissing medical advice while they and their friends made billions on Wall Street, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans are waiving the white flag. We’d say they should be ashamed of themselves, but they proved long ago to be incapable of having any shame.

“A tweet, a press release, or privately made remarks does not immunize craven Congressional Republicans from Donald Trump’s legacy. It just means they valued packing the courts with extremist judges over fulfilling their oath of office, threatening to strip away our right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and make personal decisions about our healthcare.

“The Sierra Club and millions of voters will never forget or forgive the neglectful actions of Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s regime.”
