SEATTLE -- Rep. Simpson today put forward a significant and important initiative to address the critical issue of bringing back abundant salmon and steelhead in a restored Snake River. The initiative would  make major infrastructure and economic investments to assure communities and the energy system remain strong.

In response Dan Ritzman, Sierra Club Lands, Water, and Wildlife campaign director issued the following statement.

“We’re pleased to see a proposal that recognizes the need to right an historic injustice for Northwest Treaty Tribes and respect their treaty rights.

“This comprehensive framework invests in our future -- a future of abundant, harvestable salmon and steelhead; a future of affordable, reliable clean energy; a future of vibrant communities.  Restoring abundant salmon will benefit sport, commercial and Tribal fishing communities and economies, and restore an important food source for our orca.

“We welcome this important initiative and  long-needed conversation about how best to restore the Snake and make essential energy infrastructure investments even as we hold concerns about parts of this proposal.  We look forward to working with Congressman Simpson, the other members of the Northwest delegation, the tribes, states and stakeholders to advance this important process and conversation.”
