Bill Would Prioritize Oil and Gas, Could Impact Free Speech

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- House Bill 2034, a bill prioritizing oil and gas, is working its way through the Oklahoma legislature and would have a devastating impact on renewable energy in the state. In addition, the bill would forbid state contractors from boycotting the oil and gas industry, which could have a chilling effect on free speech in Oklahoma.

What: HB2034 (full text here, more information here) wouild declare "the oil and gas industry is a vital part of the economy of the State of Oklahoma," and would require contractors working with the State of Oklahoma to certify that they are not "currently engaged in a boycott, in any manner, of the oil and gas industry."

Who: Introduced by Representative Mark McBride (District 23) and Senator Zack Taylor (District 28)
