WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Biden held a press conference as the Senate has the opportunity to safeguard democracy and Americans’ right to vote and is continuing negotiations on Biden’s plan to invest in families and communities across the country, all in the face of unified Republican obstruction.

In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:

“President Biden and Congressional Democrats rightly recognize they have real momentum toward bold legislation that improves our lives and ensures a healthier, more equitable future for all. Now isn’t merely the time to act; it may be the last chance to act. It’s why we’re encouraged to hear, once again, there’s universal agreement on bold climate action. Families – including climate-impacted families – also need the economic security offered by lower costs, a stronger social safety net, universal pre-K, and so much more. It’s why passing a full suite of bold climate and social investments is so critical. We have the framework of a deal that the President and Congress must now deliver.

“The Senate must pass the Freedom To Vote: John R Lewis Act this week to safeguard our elections and ensure every American’s access to the ballot box is secure. Then, President Biden and Senate Democrats must finish the task at hand and pass legislation that cuts costs for families, creates a social safety net for every person, protects our clean air and water, grows the burgeoning clean energy economy, and builds the country back better.”
