PHOENIX, AZ -- Today, Sierra Club filed a suit in Maricopa County Superior Court challenging the Arizona Corporation Commission’s (ACC) decision to approve Salt River Project’s revised proposal to expand the gas-fired Coolidge Generating Station in Pinal County, Arizona.

WYOMING – Yesterday, Wyoming’s Public Service Commission (PSC) held its second public comment hearing for community members to weigh in on Rocky Mountain Power’s (RMP) rate hike, the largest proposed rate increase that customers have seen in over a decade. Several community members participated in the hearing, advocating against the proposed rate increase that would raise residential rates by 20.3%, increasing average costs for customers by about $16.42 per month to start on January 1, 2024.

The North Carolina Utility Commission approved an “Affordability Settlement” between the Sierra Club, Duke Energy Progress (DEP) and Duke Energy Carolina (DEC), which resolves low-income affordability issues in rate cases filed by DEP and DEC.

Helena, MT - A  judge ruled in favor of Montana youth climate plaintiffs today, declaring the state is violating its own constitution by not protecting the right to a clean environment. Held v. Montana was the first-ever youth climate case to go to trial in the U.S. and now is the first victory, setting a precedent for further lawsuits.

UTAH – Today the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals denied a petition for review that would bring some of Utah’s worst polluting coal plants into compliance with the Clean Air Act’s visibility-protection provisions, instead enabling the Hunter and Huntington plants to continue polluting at the same damaging levels they have for more than a decade.

PHOENIX, AZ – In a blow to Tucson Electric Power (TEP) ratepayers, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC), Arizona’s public utilities commission, today voted to approve TEP’s rate increase proposal which will raise residential ratepayers’ bills by an average of 9.02%. After the ACC’s decision today, customers will see their bills increase as early as September 1.

Tatum, Texas – Yesterday the EPA agreed to settle a lawsuit with the Sierra Club over the agency’s failure to act on an inadequate Texas plan to reduce harmful sulfur dioxide pollution in East Texas. As part of the proposed settlement, EPA must either approve the Texas plan or reject it and issue a federal plan, as required by the Clean Air Act, no later than Dec. 13, 2024.

This morning, DTE filed a settlement agreement with Sierra Club and other parties to solidify the utility’s long-term plans for serving its customers’ energy needs. Upon approval by the Michigan Public Service Commission, this settlement of litigation over DTE’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) will put Michigan on track to end the burning of coal for electric generation in less than a decade, a major milestone for climate progress in the state.
