Washington, DC – This morning, news broke that Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has passed away. Feinstein served in the U.S. Senate for 31 years. Prior to that, she was the mayor of San Francisco for three terms.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:
Republicans in the House of Representatives will put forward a bill to fast-track permitting of facilities that export methane gas overseas. The House Rules Committee noticed last night that H.R. 1130 could be brought to the floor next week. This move comes as Congress is tasked with passing a bill to fund the government by September 30th.
“We’ve long known that Senator Joe Manchin is the coal baron’s favorite coal baron, but his efforts to lift up corporate polluters, block clean air, safe drinking water, and the clean energy industry go so much further,” said Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous.
House Republicans are reportedly planning to force through their dangerous attacks on environmental protections by attaching them to future must-pass legislation, following the passage of the debt ceiling bill that included provisions weakening the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Washington, DC – The Senate passed the debt limit deal that will allow the nation to pay its bills, but sets a dangerous precedent for fossil fuel companies to circumvent environmental reviews for fossil fuel projects.
The House of Representatives voted to advance the debt limit deal that will allow that nation to pay its bill in exchange for fossil fuel industry handouts and other harmful provisions that will hurt people and the environment. Despite long precedent for raising the debt ceiling with a clean bill, the deal was struck after weeks of Republicans threatening to default on America’s debts unless extreme provisions were included, like massive cuts in spending, gutting bedrock environmental laws, overturning popular provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, and more.
Washington, DC – After weeks of Republicans threatening to default on America’s debts for extreme cuts in spending and fossil fuel industry handouts, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and President Biden agreed to a deal to raise the country’s debt ceiling.
This morning, the White House released a set of legislative priorities designed to accelerate federal permitting and environmental reviews for infrastructure projects.
President Biden’s senior advisor for clean energy innovation and implementation John Podesta signaled that the president is supportive of a bill reintroduced by Senator Manchin yesterday. Under the guise of “permitting” reform, the bill would undermine bedrock environmental laws, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), force dirty infrastructure projects on vulnerable communities, and jeopardize the clean air and water of communities across the country.
Washington, DC - After many
Los republicanos de la Cámara de Representantes finalmente aprobaron su regalo legislativo a los contaminadores en lugar de cumplir con su obligación de elevar el techo de deuda y evitar una crisis financiera.
House Republicans just passed their polluter wishlist bill in exchange for fulfilling their obligation to raise the debt ceiling and avert a financial crisis. The final version of the bill included even more drastic cuts to widely-supported programs and efforts after changes were made in the middle of the night to garner support of some holdouts within their caucus. President Biden has already vowed to veto the bill, which means this stunt gives Congress little time to seriously address the possibility of defaulting on the nation’s debt.
