This morning, a massive explosion involving Ethylene Dichloride, a flammable carcinogen, erupted at the Westlake Chemical facility in Sulphur, Southwest Louisiana. The explosion is still being investigated and its full impact on neighboring communities is unclear. Six people have been reported injured.

WASHINGTON — NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council), together with Sierra Club and the Environmental Integrity Project, sued the Environmental Protection Agency today to force it to fulfill its Clean Air Act obligations and require states to close polluter loopholes in state plans under the Act. Decades-old gaps in the law allow industry to evade responsibility for preventable harms that disproportionately affect communities of color and low income communities, and the agency has failed to act to close these loopholes.

Last night, Detroit activists and energy experts came together for a digital town hall and community Q & A to discuss Detroit’s energy burden, the percentage of household income spent on energy bills, which has grave disparities across racial lines. The event was hosted by: EcoWorks Detroit, Elevate Energy, Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), Sierra Club, Soulardarity and We Want Green Too, and featured a panel of experts that talked about the problem and engaged the community in a discussion about solutions.

San Juan, Puerto Rico -- Today, Sierra Club and Alianza Energía Renovable Ahora (AERA) filed over 15,000 public comments with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), asking the Commission to end operations at a liquified methane gas import terminal that was built without FERC approval, environmental impact review, risk studies or notification of nearby residents.

Houston, Texas - Today, as President Biden visits Houston, residents are raising concerns about a potentially massive flare of air pollution related to the re-starting of local refineries and chemical plants which were closed for more than a week as an extreme winter storm ravaged the region. This potential new pollution flare follows on the heels of a huge, already documented toxic release of pollutants from Texas facilities during the winter storm.
