WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the National PFAS Contamination Coalition, Sierra Club, Center for Health Environment and Justice, and more than 60 other organizations sent a letter to the Biden Administration calling for the safe and expeditious clean up of PFAS-contaminated federal sites. PFAS, or Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, are synthetic chemicals that are widely used in consumer products and at military and industrial sites. These “forever chemicals” never break down in the environment, and exposure is linked to a variety of health problems including kidney and testicular cancer, damaged immune systems, and harm to the liver, thyroid, and pancreatic function.

Columbus, OH - Today, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) released a report that shows that a class of extremely toxic chemicals known as PFAS has been used in Ohio’s oil and gas wells since at least 2013. Due to gaps in Ohio’s disclosure rules, the full extent of the use of PFAS in oil and gas drilling and extraction may have been concealed from regulators and the public and as a result Ohio communities may unknowingly be exposed to highly hazardous substances.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a dramatic revision to its drinking water limits for four toxic PFAS chemicals. The agency is lowering its lifetime health advisory levels for two PFAS chemicals - PFOS and PFOA - by more than 1000-fold to 20 and 4 parts per quadrillion, respectively. EPA is also setting new health advisories for two common PFAS chemicals that were invented as replacements - known as GenX and PFBS, to 10 and 2000 parts per trillion respectively.

The symposium builds on testimonies given by impacted community members at CFE’s November 2021 PFAS Incineration Town Hall. The Symposium will offer further community case studies and discussions on how to move from descriptions of the problems with PFAS disposal toward equitable solutions.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A new report released today found concerning levels of toxic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) found in home garden fertilizer products widely sold throughout the United States. The report, based on testing conducted by the Sierra Club and the Ecology Center, found PFAS chemicals in nine fertilizers made from sewage sludge -- commonly called “biosolids” in ingredient lists -- and maps more than 30 companies selling sludge-based fertilizers and composts for home use across the US. Eight of the nine products exceed the screening guideline for PFOS or PFOA set in Maine, the state with the strictest safeguards for PFAS levels in sludge spread on agricultural lands.
