Annapolis, MD - Today, the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) announced its proposal to reject permit revision requests that would have significantly delayed water pollution safeguards at the Chalk Point (Prince George), Dickerson (Montgomery County) and Morgantown (Charles County) coal-fired power plants. The updated water pollution permits require the plants to put in place mandatory pollution control measures to reduce discharges of toxic metals into the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers by November 1, 2020.

Today, the Sierra Club and its environmental allies filed their opening brief in federal court to challenge the Trump Administration’s so-called “ACE” rule—also known as the Dirty Power Plan. Concocted by former coal lobbyist and current EPA chief Andrew Wheeler, this reckless and unlawful rule will allow fossil fuel-burning power plants to keep dumping carbon dioxide pollution into our air with essentially no restraints, driving dangerous climate change to ever more catastrophic levels.
Washington, DC — This Earth Day, activists will turn up the heat on Wall Street through mass online actions.
Earth Day Live, the three-day online Earth Day celebration, will dedicate an entire day — Thursday, April 23 — to “Divest,” a day-long push to end the financing of climate destruction.

SANDERSVILLE, GA -- The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has denied a request for additional time to begin construction on the proposed Plant Washington, signaling the end of the troubled 12-year-old project. The now defunct consortium of electric membership corporations (EMCs) behind the project had 30 days to appeal the EPD decision which expired last week.
Sierra Club is joining the call for action after the implosion of the Crawford coal plant smokestack by Hilco Redevelopment Partners (Hilco) on Chicago’s Southwest Side, blanketed the Little Village neighborhood in a dust cloud that fogged streets and burned lungs. The demolition’s timing on Saturday was made all the more concerning by the COVID-19 pandemic still sweeping through Illinois. The novel coronavirus has been shown to be more dangerous to populations impacted by heavy pollution. For more than two years, the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) has raised grave concern about the site's developer and design. The organization has protested the trade of one polluting entity for another; a warehouse and distribution facility with significant diesel truck traffic will continue to impact this overburdened environmental justice community.
