LOS ANGELES -- On Sept. 28, the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter and Team Sierra will host outdoors advocates from across the city for the first-annual City Hike: LA fundraising event. The trek will guide participants throughout the city in order to raise money for clean energy, clean transportation, and the safeguard of California’s lands. Los Angeles currently ranks among the top U.S. cities for highest levels of toxic smog.

OAKLAND, CA – Today, Sierra, the national magazine of the Sierra Club, released its thirteenth annual “Cool Schools” ranking of North America’s greenest colleges and universities. This year, Sierra received submissions from a record 282 schools across the United States and Canada.

Louisiana -- CLECO filed its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) at the Louisiana Public Service Commission today that will guide the energy mix used to provide electricity to customers across Louisiana for the next 20 years. The plan provides for acquiring up to 1400 MW of wind and cutting back the operation of its Dolet Hills coal-burning power plant but all of the available data shows that Dolet Hills should be permanently retried as soon as feasible.

Baton Rouge, La. -- Today, SWEPCO filed its long term resource plan at the Louisiana Public Service Commission. This Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) will guide the future energy mix that SWEPCO uses to provide electricity to customers in Shreveport and Northeastern Louisiana.

Herndon, VA -- Today Dominion Energy and Governor Northam announced a program that aims to replace 13,000 diesel school buses in Virginia with clean, electric buses. This includes 1,050 buses by 2025. Virginia has 133 school districts, which serve over 1.2 million students and 17,000 school buses in its total fleet.

Houston, TX -- Today, local environmental and Indigenous activists will seek answers from BP following its announcement that it would be selling its entire Alaska portfolio to Hilcorp Energy. Following this, the activists went over to Hilcorp’s offices calling on them not to drill in the Arctic Refuge. A previously announced rally for today has been canceled following the news BP sold its Alaska portfolio.

Washington, DC -- Today, former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler’s EPA released a proposal to ignore the vast majority of climate pollution from new oil and gas operations by eliminating safeguards that limit methane emissions. Methane is a greenhouse gas 87 times more potent than carbon dioxide during the time it remains in the atmosphere.

Today, Sierra Club filed direct testimony in WEC Energy Group’s rate case, asserting that WEC is asking customers for $138 million more than is fair and reasonable due to costs associated with the company’s aging coal-fired power plants. WEC Energy Group, which operates as Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) and WEPCO (We Energies), owns all or part of seven coal plants in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, all of which are uneconomic to operate.
