WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Sierra Club’s Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement after violence at a white supremacist rally, in Charlottesville, Virginia left at least three people dead and 19 injured.

Boston, M.A.—Today the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) issued regulations designed to ensure the Commonwealth achieves the greenhouse gas emission reductions mandated by the 2008 Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA).

Nevada City, Calif.—Today, Nevada City, California became the latest in a growing movement of mountain communities to commit to move to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.

 

Surrounded by city council members, key members of the community and partners, Mayor Duane Strawser announced the city’s near unanimous vote to ensure that the city’s electricity will come entirely from renewable sources by 2030 and that all energy sources would be renewable by 2050.

Washington, DC -- Today, the Environmental Integrity Project released an analysis of Donald Trump and Scott Pruitt's enforcement of environmental laws in its first six months that found a 60-percent drop in civil penalties compared to the Obama, George W. Bush, and Clinton administrations. Thus far, the current administration has only lodged 26 violations, collecting only $12 million in penalties from companies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- At 11:30 am ET on August 15, experts from the environmental community will provide insight into the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest actions on the midterm evaluation for the previously finalized vehicle greenhouse gas emission standards, including an expected reopening of the docket for public comment. Experts will discuss the impacts this reopening will have on the environment and consumer savings, and how this fits into the  Trump administration’s ongoing agenda to weaken successful clean car standards.

Washington, DC -- Today marks the final day of the comment period on Scott Pruitt’s plan to delay implementation of key safeguards limiting methane pollution from new oil and gas operations. The agency itself has acknowledged the public health threat this delay poses, particularly to children. But at the request of the oil and gas industry, Pruitt has moved to stay enforcement of this critical rule by two years.

RICHMOND, VA -- Late yesterday evening, the Sierra Club, joined by Wild Virginia, Appalachian Voices and Protect Our Water Heritage Rights, filed objections to the United States Forest Service's proposal to facilitate the Mountain Valley Pipeline by weakening crucial provisions of the forest plan for Virginia's Jefferson National Forest, which includes part of the Appalachian Trail.

ORLANDO - The Orlando City Commission unanimously approved a resolution today establishing a goal to move Orlando to 100 percent clean and renewable energy by 2050. Orlando is now the largest city in Florida to make such a commitment and joins a growing movement of more than three dozen cities nationwide that have committed to a 100 percent clean energy future.

 

Council chambers were filled with elated members of the First 50 Coalition, a broad-based alliance led by the League of Women Voters of Orange County that is pushing for sustainability in Central Florida.
