When the Summer and Winter Milky Ways Meet
A Spanish photographer's award-winning shot of the starry transition

Bird enthusiasts flock to Monfragüe National Park in Spain for its nearly 300 avian species. Stargazers come to this protected Mediterranean forest for another reason. A few nights each year, the summer Milky Way, with its bold galactic center, and the winter Milky Way, with its gossamer band of light, can be observed in the same sky. Photographer Luis Cajete captured the celestial transition in separate images, then merged them to create this award-winning shot.
Luis Cajete was inspired to take up photography after visiting US national parks. See more of his out-of-this-world collection at sc.org/luis-cajete.
