Social Media Toolkit: Arctic Refuge Lease Sale

Social Media Toolkit: Arctic Refuge Lease Sale

The first lease sale on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge is being held on January 6, 2021.

Now is the time to act with our Indigenous partners whose ancestral homelands and cultural traditions could be lost forever if oil and gas drilling destroys the Arctic Refuge.

Our partners at The Gwich’in Steering Committee, Native Movement, and Defend the Sacred AK are holding banner drops around the world on this day—and they’ve put out the call for all Arctic activists: “Join us for an International Solidarity Banner Drop Action to protest lease sales on the coastal plain."

It’s easy to join, wherever you are. Follow these simple steps:

1. Download and print or trace your own version of Defend the Sacred AK’s lease sale banner graphic: Horizontal Aligned or Vertical Aligned (Note from our partners: “Make sure to use the banner artwork, which includes our hashtags and our @s, so people can join our movement!”)

2. Hang your mini-banner in your window, front door, back windshield, garage window—wherever it’s most visible!

3. Take a photo of the banner (or you with the banner)!

4. Use some suggested social language below, post on your accounts to show your support and solidarity with our Indigenous partners.

Note: If you prefer, you can download and post the banner image directly to your social account, just be sure to include the hashtags and organizations below.

Draft Social Language:

Use hashtags: #StandWithTheGwichin #InupiatGwichinSolidarity #DefendTheSacredAK #ProtectTheArctic

Violating the rights of Indigenous Peoples should be enough reason to not drill in the Arctic Refuge. @Interior has no regards for climate impacts + human rights.

Trump’s administration is rushing through a sham of a process to officially “sell” parts of the Arctic Refuge to oil companies for profit. Today they’re holding their lease sale -- threatening the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples.
