Governor Northam Signs Landmark Offshore Wind Legislation

Virginia Beach, VA - Today Governor Northam ceremonially signed legislation supporting offshore wind development, and along with dozens of offshore wind stakeholders celebrated the completion of construction on the demonstration project known as the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project.

Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Offshore Energy Program Director Eileen Woll released the following statement:

“Offshore wind will enable the commonwealth to meet its carbon reduction and 100% clean energy goals, and it will provide thousands of Virginians with good, family-supporting career-length jobs. Virginia’s development is particularly exciting as it marks the first offshore wind project in federal waters, cementing our position as a mid-Atlantic hub for the industry. The Sierra Club Virginia Chapter looks forward to continuing our work with a large coalition of stakeholders to ensure that all Virginians benefit from offshore wind development.”

“The CVOW project is designed to provide invaluable data on how to make offshore wind as affordable as possible — not just for Virginia, but for the entire U.S. industry. The commonwealth has an unprecedented opportunity to develop a clean energy system in an equitable way, and we look forward to continuing our work with a large coalition to ensure that all communities will benefit from offshore wind.”
