Youngkin Energy Plan Misses Mark

Virginia — Today, Governor Glenn Youngkin released the 2022 Virginia Energy Plan.

In response, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Legislative and Political Director Connor Kish released the following statement:

“The Governor’s Energy Plan hangs its hopes on new technologies that don’t exist or have unproven reliability and totally fails to prioritize technologies that are here, ready to go, and are vital to addressing the climate crisis. Somehow, most of the Governor’s plan is either stuck in the past or living in a non-existent future. The Governor had a great opportunity to lead and meet the requirements of the Virginia Energy Plan, but he missed.

The only elements of the energy plan that could benefit Virginia’s families if done properly are restoring biennial utility rate reviews, reviewing rates of return on utility cost overruns, expanding opportunity for 100% renewable energy providers, and removing the current outrageous barriers to shared solar. Virtually everything else is either a give-away to polluters or represents a false promise on unproven technologies.”
