Web Content Policy

The Washington State Chapter website provides information to anyone who wants to know anything the Sierra Club is doing anywhere in Washington.

Content includes Sierra Club sponsored and co-sponsored activities.

Guidelines for posting content:

  • Content is added by staff and volunteers from Chapter Entities (committees and local groups) who have been trained and authorized by the Web Team.
  • Entities have their own Landing Page and may create additional pages. There are three posting levels:
    1. The Chapter Calendar for all activities (Outings can be posted only by certified outings leaders)
    2. The Chapter homepage (Web Team only)
    3. Entity pages and sub-pages.

Homepage content and the menu structure are controlled exclusively by the Web Team.

After Entity volunteers have added new content to their section, they may ask the Web Team to add a brief announcement about their new content on the homepage.

The Web Team does not create content. There are no designated chapter “reporters” who can write your story. Entities should have their “content experts” write the content and have their trained volunteer post the content in their section. Content should provide all details needed by readers who are not familiar with the issue or activity: What, Why, When, Where, and Who to contact?  Provide compelling reasons why people should act and specifically what you want them to do.  Images are encouraged and require, as appropriate, the name of the creator, date, location and their permission. We do not publish someone’s work without their permission.

Entities are responsible for the accuracy, completeness and approvals of the information they post.  To maintain website consistency, clarity and quality, the Web Team may review new content and make simple corrections and changes in grammar, editorial style, spelling, word usage, and format. The Web Team will not make major changes without consulting Entities.
