Inslee fracked gas event!

Inslee fracked gas event!

By: Sept Gernez, Conservation Organizer

For the past decade, the Sierra Club and our partners have been fighting coal, oil and gas export projects and infrastructure expansions. To this day, no project that we have fought has become operational. We have beat back coal and oil, but now, fracked gas is the next big climate fight.

Join us at a rally and petition delivery to Governor Inslee’s office in Olympia on February 21st!

We know that two thirds of “natural” gas is fracked, and that fracking is a dirty and environmentally hazardous extraction process that emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas 87 times as warming as Carbon Dioxide. When properly accounting for methane leaks, fracked gas has climate impacts that rival those of coal.

Utilities and fossil fuel companies are trying to build two massive fracked gas facilities, right here in Washington. First, Puget Sound Energy is proposing to operate a massive liquified natural gas (LNG) facility in Tacoma, that would sacrifice community health and safety, ratepayer money, and Puyallup Tribal land, for an LNG storage facility we do not need. Next, the world’s largest fracked gas to methanol refinery, proposed in Southwest Washington would consume more gas than any sector of Washington’s economy, necessitating a new fracked gas pipeline which may go down the entire length of our state. The refinery alone would increase our state’s global warming emissions by nearly 10%.

Governor Inslee and his Department of Ecology can stop both these projects. While Inslee has championed policies to limit climate pollution and promote clean energy, he has yet to publicly oppose fracked gas infrastructure projects proposed for the state -- including Tacoma LNG and the Kalama fracked gas-to-methanol refinery -- which threaten to dramatically increase Washington’s contribution to the climate crisis.

As our “green governor,” we want Governor Inslee to make clean energy decisions that protect our health, safety, and climate, and don’t lock us into dirty fracked gas export and infrastructure.

That’s why on Thursday, February 21st, we will be delivering over 130 Thousand comments against these projects to Governor Inslee’s office in Olympia! We hope you can join us!
