Gov. Hochul is gung-ho on nuclear power, but we say No!
Nuclear Power will leave New Yorkers tied to oil and gas while the most costly energy on earth gets built, then tied to nuclear power for another 40 years!
There are dangers associated with nuclear power; emergency shutdowns, the possibility of accidents and meltdowns, health impacts and the fact that there is no repository for the deadly high-level radioactive waste.
Governor Hochul was told by NYSERDA and NYPA that the cost of building nuclear power is astronomical and will be a liability for NY State. She is ignoring and hiding the recommendation in the reports, and recklessly putting money into nuclear power. She wants to build 6 nuclear power plants and the Public Service Commission has approved an up to $33 billion subsidy (bailout) to prop up the 4 aging up-state nuclear power plants - three in Oswego County and one in Wayne County, starting in 2029 through 2049 - mid-century!
Nuclear power is not zero emissions, is not affordable and leaves a legacy of radioactive waste in communities where reactors reside.
Hochul’s financial give-away to the nuclear industry is gambling with New Yorkers' money. Hey Governor Hochul, it seems as if you may have a gambling problem. For help, call Gamblers Anonymous National Hotline at 1-855-222-5542. Renewable energy projects and programs continue to get the short end of the stick. Any money spent on nuclear power is money NOT spent on renewable energy. We all want affordable, safe, renewable energy.

1. Our energy bills will explode. The Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia has increased ratepayers energy bills by 25%. The cost was $36 billion which is $17 billion over budget.
2. Ratepayers and taxpayers will bear the burden of extraordinary costs, whether subsidizing old nuclear power facilities or building new ones. 3. Billions of dollars in subsidies were granted in 2016 to keep the aging upstate nuclear plants in New York operational until 2029. Your proposal to extend the subsidies for an additional 20 years is outrageous. New York families should not be forced to continue funding these reactors. No more subsidies for nuclear reactors.
4. NYSERDA is refusing to release reports to the public that you requested which expose the unacceptable costs of nuclear power. This would impose a huge liability on NY State. We call on you to release all reports now.
5. Spending any more money on nuclear reactors will prevent NYS from building a renewable energy future and is reckless fiscal policy.
