The Sierra Club California Conservation Committee

We are the conservation arm of Sierra Club California, and have the primary responsibility for determining, interpreting, and applying Sierra Club policy on conservation issues of statewide significance. Our role is to study issues, develop policy, and coordinate and implement projects and programs for conservation issues that extend across chapter boundaries to all or part of California. Matters unique to a single chapter should be referred to the chapter.

Policy: You can find out whether the CCC has taken a position on a conservation issue by consulting the Resolutions Summary Matrix. New state conservation policy is created by the CCC at one of their four annual meetings. New policy is especially useful when staff or advocates want to take a public position or action. Prior to each CCC general meeting, the chapter ExCom or CCC issue committee submits a formal resolution to the CCC chair or a vice chair using the CCC template.

Conservation work: The actual conservation work of the CCC is done by almost 20 committees and task forces, which are managed by the Steering Committee. These committees research and monitor issues, attend statewide government meetings, propose conservation policy, and run statewide conservation campaigns. You can find out more about issue committees here. We hope you will participate in our statewide conservation work by joining one of our issues committees.

The CCC is composed of 57 delegates: (click here for a list of our most recent delegates)

  • 26 of whom are appointed by the 13 Sierra Club chapters in California, including from the Toiyabe Chapter's California-based Groups,
  • 24 of whom are appointed by the CCC Steering Committee,
  • 7 CCC Steering Committee members.

The CCC is led by a steering committee of seven elected active members. The Steering Committee builds CCC meeting agendas, sends out meeting minutes, maintains the website – and does whatever is needed to establish and disseminate statewide conservation policy.

The current CCC Steering Committee Members are:

  • Martha Kreeger, Chair
  • Kathy Dervin, Northern Vice Chair
  • Yvonne Watson, Southern Vice Chair
  • Norman LaForce, Northern Secretary
  • Pam Nelson, Southern Secretary
  • Joan Taylor, CCC Liaison (Sierra Club California Conservation Chair)
  • Chris Gilbert, Treasurer/Registrar

The entire CCC meets in the spring to elect Steering Committee members and again sometime in the fall. The CCC may also meet once or twice more each year via teleconferenced sites in Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento, and other locations.

At CCC meetings, delegates consider and vote on conservation policy resolutions, educate each other about issues, best known methods, Sierra Club tools, successes and disappointments – and get to know other activists throughout the state.  These meetings are often the only time that many activists, who normally may only work with each other via conference calls, have a chance to meet each other in person. CCC meetings are open to all Sierra Club members. The CCC Steering Committee has monthly conference call meetings.
