January 2025: Following Trump’s Day 1 Executive Orders and other directives to halt all funds authorized by Congress through the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Sierra Club quickly sent FOIA requests to a number of agencies implementing these laws. The requests seek records that will help answer several basic questions: (1) Which specific programs, grants, and loans, have been blocked from funding, and which have not? (2) What reasons were offered for pausing or terminating funding? and (3) Did polluting industries or other friends of the Trump administration have an influence on these decisions? While Sierra Club may have to take the agencies to court to force release of the documents, our attorney team has deep experience from doing just that during the first Trump Administration. By pursuing these records, our goal is to shed light on the funding chaos that is harming communities and the climate, and provide ammunition to oppose it.
