Careers with the Environmental Law Program

ELP Spring Retreat 2020

Employees of the Sierra Club live our motto of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet. The work is meaningful and the people are great. Whether you work in our Oakland headquarters or are based in one of our nationwide field, chapter or legislative offices, your contributions will help us to achieve our mission.

ELP attorneys and staff are at the cutting edge of climate change litigation. We work with our allies to reduce the environmental and public health degradation that flows from the lifecycle of fossil fuel use, ranging from destructive mining and fracking to combustion to disposal. At the same time, we advocate for the expansion of energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions. In the past few years alone, we have achieved tremendous public health and climate change benefits for many communities, including in particular for those engaged in environmental justice struggles.

The Sierra Club is evolving its hiring practices to be better aligned with our principles of equity, inclusion, and racial justice. We are looking to hire people who share those values, and who reflect the communities in which we live and work.

Equity, Inclusion, and Justice at the Sierra Club

In 2015, Sierra Club formalized its vision for an internal transformation to become a more equitable and inclusive organization. Sierra Club and its Environmental Law Program recognize that the environmental movement and the field of law have historically been white, wealthy, and male-dominated. Given that history, we are committed to creating a workplace where people from all social identities and backgrounds feel welcomed and can thrive. We strive to become an organization that attracts, retains, and celebrates people from all avenues of life who share our values. Sierra Club has adopted the Jemez Principles, a set of guidelines designed to help people from different cultures, communities, politics, and organizations work together in solidarity. The Environmental Law Program strives to conduct litigation in accordance with the Jemez Principles and in furtherance of Sierra Club’s vision of becoming a more equitable and inclusive organization.
