Funding Recreation, Water Quality, Soil Conservation - 3/8 cent sales tax

Sierra Club and its allies are asking our legislators to fund the trust with a 3/8 cent sales tax.  You can help by contacting your state legislators, asking for their support of the 3/8 cent sales tax to support parks, wildlife, water quality, and agricultural soils in Iowa, with no changes in the funding formula. photo

It is time to fund water quality and to create a sustainable revenue source for the Department of Natural Resources.  The best way to do this is to implement the 3/8 cent sales tax that voters overwhelmingly supported when they approved a constitutional amendment that would create a sustainable revenue source for the Department of Natural Resources.  Article VII Section 10 of the Iowa Constitution created a Natural Resources & Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund (Trust) that is to be supported by a sales tax of 3/8 of one cent.  This trust fund is to be used “for the purposes of protecting and enhancing water quality and natural areas in this State including parks, trails, and fish and wildlife habitat, and conserving agricultural soils in this State.”  The voters knew what they were voting for and supported the constitutional amendment; that is why the amendment passed with 63% voter approval.

The voters spoke when they approved the amendment to Iowa's constitution.  Now it is time for the legislators to pass the 3/8 cent sales tax with no changes in the funding formulas.
