Sierra Club Explains Support for Green Hydrogen

New Sierra Club Report Shows Support for Green Hydrogen

By Katie Rock

Hype has been heavy for the potential to build hydrogen into a clean energy future. The federal Build Back Better package includes billions of dollars in support for hydrogen energy in tax credits and supporting energy hubs. Germany has recently incorporated support for hydrogen, especially green hydrogen, in its national strategy to wean off fossil fuels. And new hydrogen energy technology and projects are constantly emerging.

Is the hype real? A new short report from the Sierra Club makes sense of it all. The Beyond Coal campaign has been tracking the latest in hydrogen power technology and offers this report as a primer. It is intended to cut through the hype and make clear – The Sierra Club only supports the use of green hydrogen.

I highly encourage you to check it out for an overview of the technology, chemistry, and engineering. Read the blog or download the report here.  It breaks down what green hydrogen is, and what makes it better than brown or blue hydrogen, in full detail. Iowa is well positioned for a green hydrogen economy. Instead of curtailing wind turbines during high winds, excess clean energy could be converted to liquid hydrogen fuel and used in other applications. Expect to hear more about a green hydrogen economy for Iowa in the months and years ahead.
