Coal ash

Sierra Club IA Webinar Series:
Toxic Coal Ash in Iowa

Coal-burning plants take a major toll on our environment and public health in Iowa. While coal's role in generating air pollution is well known, its impact on our water is just as critical. Join us for a webinar on the impact of toxic coal ash in Iowa, and what we can do to clean up our waterways.

When: March 13, 2025 at 6 PM Central

Where: Virtual webinar

Register: Join us to learn more about the toxic coal ash issue facing Iowans.

For most of us, coal plants conjure images of toxic black smoke billowing from imposing chimney stacks--and rightly so. Unfortunately, the environmental and public health tolls of burning coal goes beyond air pollution: it pollutes our waterways and threatens our drinking supply.

Last year, our Sierra Club team worked with researchers at the WashU Law Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic to develop fact sheets on coal ash sites across Iowa--and the results are alarming to say the least.

Join us to learn more about the toxic coal ash issue facing Iowans.

Come learn from the Clinic's own Peter Goode, Environmental Engineer, and Tara Rocque, Associate Professor of Practice and Assistant Director, about what coal ash is and how it impacts our environment here in Iowa. They'll present their findings from four different coal plant communities across Iowa, and conclude the talk with a Q&A to field your questions.

Before we can solve a problem, we need to understand what we're up against and how we can act to make a difference. Coal ash is one of the most urgent environmental issues facing Iowans, and we know the best way to tackle it is with a transition to 100% clean, renewable energy in our state.

RSVP for the March 13 webinar and get involved in the fight for clean water in Iowa!
