Dysfunctional Legislature Fails Iowans on Property Rights
For five years, Iowans in an unlikely coalition joined together to fight for Iowans property rights, a shining example of bipartisanship for the betterment of Iowa. Senate Majority Leader Klimesh and leadership failed Iowans because they are unwilling to work together.
The Iowa Senate no longer represents the people of Iowa, they’ve lost their way. The chamber works for big-business and a race for Iowa to become “energy dominant”. We’ve held dozens of meetings across the state in the last five years and we’ve heard Iowans talk about property rights, protecting soil, clean water, building legacies, revitalizing rural towns and a love for the land. No one is asking for carbon pipelines, hydrogen, data centers or other extractive industries so Iowa can be “energy dominant”.
Sierra Club Iowa Chapter, landowners and everyday Iowans are not done fighting to preserve Iowa’s land, legacy and future. We’ll take it to the polls in November so we can build a legislature that will pass HF2104 and listen to the needs and wants of Iowans.
Last year, the governor said she would sign a clean bill if one were sent to her, yet she wasn’t even sent a bill this year. The House passed a clean bill. But the senate leaders didn’t even listen to their own governor.
The Iowa legislature has failed to protect Iowans’ property rights for five years! This is a failure on the part of the Republican Party which has been in the majority throughout. It’s time for new legislators who support the party platform and new leadership that listens to the voice of the people.
Jan Norris, Montgomery County Landowner: “Five years of lobbying our state legislature to do something to protect property rights have fallen on deaf ears. It appears the only voice we have is our vote.”
Cindy Kruthoff, Crawford County Landowner: "Once again, our state government has failed land owners who are simply trying to protect their property rights. I am very disappointed as I had hoped that in year five of this battle, a bill would be passed that protected land owners. The Senate Republican mentality of 'loyalty to the caucus' has to stop. Iowa citizens deserve representatives that fight for them, support party platform planks, and are willing to work with the other party to come up with solutions. The ordinary Iowan should not have to donate thousands of dollars to campaigns to be heard and respected."
