William and Catherine Trout

William and Catherine Trout
  • john Muir lived with the Trout Family of Meaford Ontario, from fall of 1864 to spring 1866. Showing his inventive genius, Muir worked to improve the output of rake and broom handles in Trout's Mill during this period. After hours, Muir discussed religion, the natural world, and mechanization with the family patriarch, William Trout. Muir later corresponded with Harriet "Hattie" Trout.
  • Muir's time there making botanical discoveries culminated in his discovery of the rare Calypso borealis orchid, leading to his very first written publication.
