Ranked Choice Voting

In Maine

State legislative primaries, US Senate primaries, and US House primaries will use Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) this year.  Of course, if there is only one candidate, or just two candidates in a race, it is not a factor. In the general election, RCV will be used for the presidential electors, for the Susan Collins race, and for both the congressional races (again, where there are three or more candidates). RCV will not be used this year for the presidential primary, or for the general election for state House and state Senate. Maine's constitution says that the general election winner is chosen “by a plurality of the votes.”  And the Supreme Court decided that RCV is inconsistent with that language. If the people’s veto collects enough signatures by the deadline this summer, RCV will NOT be used in the presidential general election. Please see the State's website for why RCV applies to some races and not all.
