Michigan Energy, Michigan Job Coalition Press Conference, May 24

The Michigan Energy, Michigan Jobs (MEMJ) coalition, made up of environmental, public health and clean energy advocates including Sierra Club, joined House and Senate lawmakers to send a message: transitioning to reliable, 100% clean, renewable energy is a top priority.

During a press conference and day of action on May 24 MEMJ and its member organizations urged the legislature to make Michigan a leader in clean energy investment and deployment. Advocates called on Senate and House leaders to pass Senate Bills 271, 272, and 273 which would:

  1. Require utilities to produce 100% carbon-free electricity by 2035.
  2. Increase Michigan’s energy waste reduction standard, because energy savings will mean less pollution in our air and more savings for consumers.
  3. Empower the Michigan Public Service Commission to hold big utilities accountable for reliability, equity, health, affordability and climate impacts.

The coalition of partners also brought in support for other issues, including community solar and more utility accountability. Read more about the event HERE.
