Whitmer Signs a Major Climate Win - Clean Energy Laws Make Michigan a Climate Leader

Lansing, MI - Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the clean energy bills into law, officially making Michigan a leader in clean energy and climate action for the nation. The Sierra Club spent the last year advocating fiercely for these bills while also fighting to ensure they were not diluted by industry and utility lobbyists.

Sierra Club Michigan’s Legislative and Political Deputy Director, Tim Minotas attended the bill signing and had the following to say:

“Today, Governor Whitmer signed into law one of the most ambitious and comprehensive climate action plans in the country. These new laws deliver clean and affordable energy for Michiganders while all providing good-paying, family-sustaining jobs for Michiganders.

Thanks to Sierra Club’s grassroots volunteers who spent months working alongside staff and partners, we got these strong clean energy bills across the finish line. We were able to hold the line on incredibly important components of the package because of the unrelenting advocacy of environmental justice partners across the state.

Today's major victory builds our efforts going into 2024 to cut greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, combat plastic waste, and get community solar passed so communities can harness the sun and create their own power. The fight is never over, and Sierra Club is ready to continue advocating for our people and planet.”
