Michigan Residents Rally to Protect Clean Energy and Water from Data Center Expansion

Data Centers Rally Signs

Dozens of climate and clean energy advocates including many SEMG activists gathered yesterday in Auburn Hills for a rally and Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) public hearing to voice concerns about the state’s growing wave of data center and artificial intelligence (AI) developments.

Participants warned that the speculative boom in energy-intensive data centers poses a serious threat to Michigan’s clean energy goals, energy affordability, and precious water resources. Speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining the state’s commitment to a just and sustainable clean energy transition — one that prioritizes people, communities, and the environment over corporate profit.

“We were heard — individually and as a group,” one organizer said. “This isn’t just about technology; it’s about protecting Michigan’s future, our air, and our sacred waters.”
