Who Will Solve the Climate Crisis? Lessons From Local Elections in Southeast Michigan

No one sector holds all the cards in this climate game, but some have more ability to make changes than others.  While science and technology have essential roles, effective government action may offer our best hope. From library boards to the presidency, elected officials have countless opportunities to implement sustainable solutions and rein in corporate short-sightedness to guide us toward a safer future.

Vote Metro Detroit Ballot Box

Voting is one of the most powerful forms of environmental activism. The Sierra Club helps voters make informed choices by endorsing candidates who demonstrate strong environmental knowledge and commitment. Our careful endorsement process includes a detailed questionnaire and, in some cases, interviews that provide deeper insight into each candidate’s values and priorities. Meeting candidates face to face also helps us builds lasting connections.

This year, we endorsed 21 candidates for local offices in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties—15 of whom were elected. Our conversations not only shaped our endorsements but also laid the groundwork for future collaboration with candidates who share our conservation goals.

With the election season concluded, we’ll hold a wrap-up meeting to reflect on lessons learned and improve next year’s endorsement process. Strengthening relationships with candidates and elected officials remains one of the most effective ways to advance conservation and climate action at the local level.
