Action Alert: OPPD

Action Alert!

Don’t Let OPPD’s “Magic of the Future” Use Classic Magical Misdirection
OPPD action alert

Have you seen OPPD’s TV ads, full page newspaper ads, social media posts and billboards? Why would a monopoly need to spend all that money on promotion?  OPPD is claiming unprecedented growth in their service area which they are using to justify more fossil fuel growth among other things.  But their media campaign has created a lack of trust. Already OPPD has reneged on their promise to shut down the last two coal burning units at the North Omaha Station this year. They have not met their goals for demand side management (modification of consumer demand for energy through various methods such as financial incentives and behavioral change through communication and education) and they have not met their goals for solar energy.

Even if OPPD’s projections for growth are true, they need to be the leaders in smart growth like supporting stronger building codes that require energy efficiency and sustainable construction materials. Building to higher standards will save energy and money. Constructing buildings to older codes can lead to costly repairs and underperformance. Upgrading commercial and residential energy codes faster should unlock federal government tax credits and funding sources like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Contact OPPD’s leadership by June 11and tell them that you do not support their current plan. Tell them to keep past promises before making new commitments and tell them that they need to document their projections for growth and to explain how they are promoting smart growth.
